Furnace efficiency to change on 5/1/2013
January 25, 2012
On 5/1/2013 the minimum efficiency requirement for a furnace in Colorado will be 90%.
The new Federal Energy Star® requirements for the U.S North, including Colorado, will be 90% or higher. This is a new federal law that all Colorado contractors will need to follow. If you are thinking of replacing your furnace and are considering the replacement to be an 80% AFUE model, it will need to be installed before the new deadline. The new 90%+ furnaces will require a new style PVC flue to be installed along with the furnace. This is because the newer, high efficiency furnaces emit water vapor along with carbon dioxide as the flue gas which would rust conventional metal piping. If you are considering the most economical choice for replacing your furnace, an 80% model would be our recommendation, but it will have to be done before the deadline. After that we are legally required to install the newer high efficiency furnaces. Please give us a call and we can discuss the many furnace options that are available to you. After talking with you, we can help you to make the best choice for your lifestyle.
