Questions & Answers - Builders

Since 1950, Builder’s Heating & Air Conditioning has been your comfort specialists. In those nearly seven decades we’ve been asked many questions. We thought it would be valuable to tell you about some of the questions we hear most frequently.

Heat Pumps, Gas Furnaces, Radiant heat. Help! My head is spinning. What’s the best choice for heating a home in Denver, Colorado?

We sympathize with you because we know how confusing it can be. It’s why Builder’s Heating & Air Conditioning is always here to answer your questions about furnace maintenance, repair, and replacement for all our friends in Denver, CO. First let us say, Builder’s will never try to sell you something you don’t need. The correct answer to your question is, it depends on your situation.

If you are building a new home or doing a major remodel, we are big fans of hydronic radiant floor heating. There is no ductwork to install. The system is quiet and efficient with no fans blowing air around the house carrying dirt and dust. The upfront costs are higher, but we really believe it’s worth it in the long run.

If you currently have forced air heat, the most common choice is between a gas furnace and an electric heat pump. As a rule, heating with gas costs less than heating with electricity. If your home doesn’t have natural gas service, an electric heat pump is a great choice to heat and cool a home. New technology has made heat pumps much more effective at heating homes even in cold weather.

I hear a lot of talk from HVAC companies about the advantages of a programmable thermostat, but my mother has one in her home and says she doesn’t use it much. Will they really save money?

We can’t speak to your mother’s situation, but the short answer to your question is yes. The thermostats are especially valuable in situations where no one is home for several hours during the day. According to energy.gov, adjusting your thermostat by 7-10 degrees for eight hours a day can cut your yearly heating and cooling costs by as much as 10%.

Now let’s get back to your mother’s situation. Builder’s finds many people don’t use their thermostats because they find them complicated and/or intimidating. Putting it simply, they are afraid to change the settings because they might “screw something up.” You don’t have to worry about that with Builder’s. When you buy a new thermostat from us we will show you how to use it correctly and answer any questions you might have.

I keep hearing about how great tankless water heaters are in Denver, CO. Why does everyone seem to like them so much?

Let’s start with the obvious. A tankless hot water system gives you a nearly unlimited supply of hot water, which means no more cold showers when your home is filled with visitors for the upcoming holidays. The water is heated almost instantly as you use it. It’s also more energy efficient because you’re not using gas or electricity to keep an entire tank of water hot 24/7. Builder’s is proud to feature Rinnai tankless water heaters for your home or business. Despite the advantages, tankless systems are not the best choice in every situation. The best thing to do is to call us to talk about your specific situation.

Builder’s Heating & Air Conditioning is always here to answer your HVAC questions. Just one more way we are working to keep Denver and the suburbs comfortable.
